Pieter,

I didn't get that point originally. Thanks for clarifying!

Sure, small companies can't do as much for the environment as larger ones, but even small things make a difference if done by many firms. There are many things print providers can do to lessen the environmental impact of their products and services.

They can start with the equipment they buy. For example, some vendors have print engines that are engineered to not have any waste toner. Others exceed ozone emission requirements, making them a lot friendlier for the people who are around them every day. Others use less power. There are biodegradable wide format ink jet inks. On the offset side, how about using waterless plates or modern presses that have very short makeready times, using less ink and paper. Designers and ad agencies can steer customers to using recycled papers. Packaging can be designed to have less waste. All these things add up. Print providers can have an impact, and an important one. Little steps make a difference, and potentially a much greater one than that of the equipment vendors.

Think of it in terms of your home. Can you live just as well with low voltage halogen lights or fluorescents in place of regular bulbs? How about more efficient appliances? Or driving a more efficient car?

Small things, done by many, make a difference.

Eric,

of course it's not a matter of big-macro, small-micro... We all need to take responsabilities and we all need to care for the environment as much as we can. My point was that small companies tend to state that they can't do much for the environment, but rely on the 'green labels' of their suppliers.

Excellent point Pieter, but is this really an either/or? I tend to think that all companies large and small should both look out for their workers AND the macro environment and their impact on it. I don't see these two things as mutually exclusive really.

Big companies need to take responalbilities for the macro environment. Small companies need to take responsability for their workers. A recently published study about the emission of particles by laserprinters, stated that it's not enough to focus on the particles but to be also aware of the composition of those particles (aldehydes, formaldehydes). What about air analysers or purifiers in the printing rooms?
