Be a passive member Twitter: Follow only your selected news people, writers, comedians, sports figures, news organizations, whatever. You will end up with a magnificent news network -- information voyeurism without all the nonsense, chatty, Facebook "status updates."

Thanks for the fine post, Richard. Without following somebody on Twitter who linked it, I would never have seen it.

Whatever you post in the social media is FOREVER. Watch what you post and who you post it too.

For instance the above and this is now out there in cyberspace. I have no control over who reads it and where it gets forwarded too and what search engines have linked to it.

Nice post Richard. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. For me you really nailed it when you said: "We owe it to our businesses and to potential customers to be as available as we can." I couldn't agree more.

I can understand that some people will not understand that power of new media right away.
It takes time, but one day lights will go on and you will think "this social media stuff blows my mind!" Being able to communicate with people world wide, in real time (about important things-- not what they ate for lunch) it is amazing!

Marvelous article Richard, you are a word-smythe nonpareil.

Here is a link from my other profession affirming that many people dread the social media juggernaut, but do so, methinks, at their peril:

Keep up the great and humorous efforts, we all need to smile in these difficult times.

Your article hit some very sore spots with me. I also have been "enticed" into the world of "social media". I have a Facebook account that I regularly purge, then try to make things work and get frustrated as hell when nothing does what it's supposed to. I'm ready to "deactivate" the damn thing but I have been able to connect with friends and associates I haven't seen or heard from in years.
One site you might want to investigate is "Plaxo" my dad has his business in Denver and has tried to get me to join his social network, I've tried to get my mom to join FB but she hardly returns my email let alone understands the complexities of having a FB account.
I live in NY, mom in FL, my son in CA, and dad as I mentioned CO.
I think my track phone is adequate enough, thank you.
My comment to those who ask me to join or why I don't is "It just ain't my generation anymore…"
Thanks for the article

I enjoyed your article. Some valid points; although I really would recommend staying up more with Linkedin, for that (imho) has become a very powerful business tool.

Been always wanting to get more into TweetDeck (tried a while back and did not get along with me.), so thanks, will look into that over the weekend.

The thing with this social media for me, is that it is like networking on steroids. Before we choose to go visit networking functions; now via our inter-connected accounts and worlds, we are thrust into them. (Like a vortex sucking you in - for better or worse!)

Yes, naturally it is a choice and the comment about it being addictive is of course true, to a degree. Yet - In print-media, it is almost our duty to take-part in and understand these emerging communication channels. It is potentially a whole new opportunity for print-providers whom offer more than just ink on paper, not to mention the marketing aspects of it all for printers...

Have a nice weekend,
David

Crack for media addicts,my favorite line of the month. Twitter is a great info and news filter. It's narrow-cast with flair. Tweet Deck makes micro-blogging easy.

Ok, Richard, it is now your fault that I have Twitter, Facebook, AND LinkedIn on TweetDeck - didn't know about LinkedIn until you told me.
;-)

Enjoy!
